Where will Euro 2020 take place
The 2020 European Football Championship will be a unique event in the world of sports. Typically, major sporting events are held in a single country. Throughout the history of European football championships, UEFA has appointed a host country. Three times the organization of the championship was trusted by a couple of countries:
- In 2000, the right was first obtained by the Belgians and the Dutch;
- The second case was Austria and Switzerland in 2008;
- For Poles and Ukrainians, Euro 2012 was a great achievement.
The next continental tournament of 2020 falls on the anniversary date - exactly 60 years ago the first European Football Championship was held. UEFA management has rightly decided to make the tournament a pan-European football holiday.
Back in December 2012, the executive committee of the Union of European Football Associations announced that EURO 2020 will be held in various European cities. The idea of dividing Euro matches between cities of different countries belonged to the then UEFA president Michel Platini.
This format will be applied once. In 2024, UEFA will return to its traditional form. In addition, European Championship 2020 is the second tournament in history, in the final part of which 24 teams will play.
According to the UEFA criteria, the countries where the championship matches will be held should present two arenas with a capacity of at least 50 thousand places. According to the voting results, out of 19 applications received, thirteen cities were selected where Euro 2020 will be held. The results were announced in the Swiss city of Geneva at the Espace Hippomene Exhibition Center.
If you look at the map of the location of cities, you can note their equal remoteness from each other. But they cover the whole of Europe: from Bilbao in the west to Baku in the east.
